We slept in! -- Home Alone Filming Locations 30 years later!
Home Alone is THE Christmas movie of a generation. Right after Thanksgiving, this Chris Columbus-directed film is on repeat, and for good reason. Although there are plenty of funny, slapstick scenes with Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) and the wicked Wet Bandits (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), this movie hits on what the true meaning of Christmas is: love and family. You can't help but feel good (and fully entertained) at the end.
The Beyond the Backlot crew heads to the Chicagoland area (Winnetka, Wilmette, and Oak Park) to track down some of these iconic, memorable filming locations -- and fulfill last year's @BeyondtheBacklot Location Scout episode -- a true then and now filming locations adventure. As John Hughes normally did, he canvassed the north shore suburbs of Chicago to find the perfect home, neighborhood, and community for his timeless Christmas classic. It was an honor to walk in the footsteps of John Hughes' most commercially-successful film of his brilliant career.

In this episode we're exploring the Richland Fashion Mall. Opened in 1988, the Richland Mall was struggling from the beginning with vacant anchors and only half of the retail space leased. The mall remained open while mostly empty until 2022 and demolition began in 2024.

Built in Colonial Style in 1938, this mansion would soon be home to a dark secret. Firefighters were called to the home when an alarm was going off inside because of the lack of oxygen in the air. When crews arrived, they had to call the hazmat team to even go inside. What they found was haunting, over 115 accounts of animal abuse, and animals living in horrible conditions. The parents both went to prison, and the home was surrendered to the police, and shuttered. Their only child was left behind, only about 12. Her life stripped from her, as she learns the dark truth of her family. She grew up to become an animal rights activist. A tour of many of the filming locations of It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963) in Southern California, and a final visit to the elusive spot where the Big W once stood, as of 2011, the first time it has ever been visited and documented on camera since the 1991 laserdisc documentary when only one tree stood.
UPDATE: Sadly, as of 2014, the final stump of the Big W is no longer there. The entire landscape has been bulldozed into a desolate patch.

In my first ever vlog, I will start off with a short tour of Corriganville park where the Spahn Ranch scene was filmed from the movie "Once upon a time in Hollywood". In 2019 the studio recreated Spahn Ranch at Corriganville for the scene in which Brad Pitt pays a visit to George Spahn.
The movie starred Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Sharon Tate was played by Margot Robbie, which was beautifully done.
